Where to Give?

1. Set Your Criteria

As you might imagine, we’ve had to develop some criteria about where to place our gifts. There’s no lack of people and organizations knocking on our door for help. Our criteria come out of what I said earlier about the biggest issue of all for us: eternal destiny. We base our giving decisions on whether the result will be some spiritual change in a person’s life, directly or indirectly.

Think of a scale from one to ten. Whenever people come to Christ, we consider that a ten. That’s why I love the organizations that lead people to Jesus. Training Christians to go out and lead people to Christ is a nine for me. That’s the reason we got involved with several Christian colleges, for example. They’re training students to go out into the world as lights for Christ.

On the other hand, the local Boy Scouts or the chamber of commerce are good causes, but they’re not a number nine on our list. We don’t mind supporting good things in our community, but this kind of giving is not the central reason we exist. We seek to invest God’s profits in things that will make a real difference for eternity.

I’ve mentioned two new projects that are very exciting and reflect our giving criteria. One is called Every Tribe Every Nation (www.everytribeeverynation.com). Every Tribe Every Nation’s goal is to get God’s Word to every person on earth. The second big project is the Museum of the Bible (www.museumofthebible.org). This is a world-class museum in the heart of Washington, D.C.

Our decision to give to these organizations, among others, remains linked to our overarching mission to support organizations that are telling people about the love of Jesus Christ through God’s Word. This is our criteria for giving.

So I’ve told you our focus. What’s yours?

If you know it, pull out the notes app on your smart phone or open your journal and jot down your primary giving criteria. If you’ve not given it much thought, I encourage you to sit down with your family or business and pray about the direction God wants you to give. Rather than shotgunning resources all over the place, consider that there is much joy to be found in directing your efforts toward a certain area. It’s so exciting for us to see our efforts build into such a wonderful impact on the lives of so many folks.
